Frequently Asked Questions about Couple’s & Marital Counseling

What happens in counseling?
Counseling give you and your partner an opportunity to talk with someone who can look at things with some objectivity. Usually this means not taking sides. Instead, emphasis is put on looking closely at what works well between you and what can be improved.

Can the counselor give us advice?
Depending on your situation, the counselor may suggest new behaviours for the couple to try. Or the counselor may provide an alternate perspective from which to look at things. Or even spend some time coaching you around different ways of responding to each other. Counseling is a lot like learning new ways of doing things.

My partner is really dominating and harsh. How can I be sure that I’ll be heard in the counseling?
Safety is a primary factor in counseling and every effort is made to ensure the comfort and security of the couple. Generally, counselors are trained to make sure that the counseling sessions are balanced, allowing each person to speak his or her heart. Each person is respected and any disrespectful behaviors or actions are pointed out and discussed in the counseling.
